The Severn Bore is a tidal wave that sweeps through Gloucestershire along the river Severn. Based on various factors and conditions the wave varies in height and power. This variation is given a star rating 1 to 5.
This year , 2014, is set to have several 5 star bores the first of which is on Sunday 2nd February. You can see a timetable of when the bore is due by visiting our website www.thesevernbore.co.uk
Due to the heavy rain and flooding around Gloucestershire the river levels are quite high at the moment. More water in the river reduces the visual wave at the narrower points along the river. The best places to see the bore this weekend are further downstream such as Newnham on Severn, Broadoak, Arlingham and Epney.
We would recommend to stay away from Maisemore bridge as the road is likely to flood.
Large 4 and 5 star bores tend to attract huge crowds of people so when planning your trip remember to leave early enough to secure parking. The Severn Bore can also arrive early or late by 30 mins or more so allow a contingency in your plans for this. Many of the pubs and restaurants along the river rely on the Severn bore to bring good trade, so we would encourage everyone to support them by popping in for a drink and a bite to eat. by doing this you will be able to use their car parks.
One of the fantastic spectacle of the Severn Bore is watching surfers and kayakers attempting to ride the Bore for as long as possible. Steve king a local surfer holds a Guinness world record for the longest continual ride of 7.6 miles!
